Coach Maki was born in China, and immigrated to Japan in 1992 at a young age. He began playing youth soccer in Japan at age 8, and continued to play all the way up through high school, as well as futsal during university.

Coach Maki began his coaching career in 2011 while still living in Nara, Japan, starting with 4th graders for a local town team. He eventually worked his way up into coaching for Partida Ikoma FC, the 3rd top team in Nara Prefecture, before moving to the US in 2014 with his American wife, whom he met during university in Japan. He has continued to coach various U9 through U15 teams for boys and girls since coming to the US, first on the East coast in the greater New York Metropolitan area, before moving to Michigan in 2016. He is also currently an active player in the adult indoor soccer league in the Novi, Michigan area.

Maki is a true student of the game.  He currently holds the US Soccer 'C' License, US Youth Soccer 'National Youth' License and US Soccer 'Referee License - Grade 8'.  From the United Soccer Coaches he holds the 'Goal Keeper License Level 3', 'High School' Dilpoma and the 'Director of Coaching' Diploma.  He also holds the Japanese Football Association 'C' License and 'Referee License - Level 4'
